"Life on earth is possible because we are in an out-of-equilibrium system, we are a mind-bogglingly complex system." This was stated by the professor of the School of Science, Javier Burguete Javier Burguete, who was in charge of giving the March seminar of the group Science, Reason and Faith focused on "The origin of the universe: new perspectives".

During it, he explained how physical thinking about the origin of the universe has been changing and what the current theories are about how it will end. "There is a lot to talk about," he said. He pointed out that ancient physics was based mostly on intuition and observation of immediate reality. After Newton's physics, in the 20th century there was a series of revolutions, because physicists realized that the immediate world did not encompass all of reality and, in order to explain it, they needed to broaden the view. But there are still many loose ends: "Today we do not know what happened in the first instants of time, we do not know what happens with the gravitational theory, nor do we know yet how to unify gravitational theory and electromagnetism".

Furthermore, he stated that talking in Physics before the Big Bang makes no sense: "The only thing we can say for sure is that we do not know what happened before and we do not know what is beyond the frontiers of the universe, if there really are any". To clarify what physics does, he used the simile of the onion: "The problem is to know how many layers it has and if it has a last layer. If we are not able to describe the physical universe, neither is what lies beyond the boundaries of the universe".
