The biochemist Jesús Bañales, researcher of the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, will spend a stay from October at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minnesota, USA), to extend his programs of study on the mechanisms of biliary secretion in the liver.

Specifically, he will focus for two years on a topic related to his doctoral thesis , in which he analyzed the mechanisms of bicarbonate outflow into the bile in response to a hormone (secretin). Previously it had been observed in the laboratory Genetics Molecular of CIMA that this excretion is altered in certain patients with liver diseases.

At the American center, the biochemist will study the cells of the bile ducts to learn more about the role played in them by a protein, AE2, "I hope that the results will be useful for the treatment of liver patients with these alterations", he says.

Jesús Bañales will collaborate with Professor Nicholas LaRusso in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic. This expert is president of the American Gastroenterology association and was publisher of the journal Gastroenterology.
