On Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25, the University of Navarra will hold its XI conference of update in Nutrition, which will bring together 150 specialists and students to address the importance of the microbiota - the set of microorganisms that inhabit our intestine and whose weight reaches two kilos in each individual - for the treatment and prevention of diseases such as cancer or obesity.

This is precisely what is indicated by several programs of study published by the team of Full Professor of Nutrition of the University of Navarra and researcher of CIBERobn Alfredo Martinez, organizer of this course. Recently in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, researcher and his team confirmed that the enrichment of bacteria related to intestinal mucus was associated with anti-obesity effects in murine models of metabolic syndrome.

Likewise, another article published in Beneficial microbes explains how the microbiota of our intestine does not act as a static system, but is affected by the per diem expenses, whose alterations can lead to problems of obesity, diabetes, inflammation, etcetera.

The conference, organized by the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition, are articulated in different round tables where gastrointestinal health will be addressed through issues such as gluten intolerance (celiac and non-celiac), the manifestations and treatments of food allergy or the role of prebiotics.

Also, among the invited experts, the researcher of the high school of research Hospital Vall d'Hebron Francisco Guarner, who will speak about the intestinal microbiota and the per diem expenses; and Luis A. Moreno, Full Professor of the University of Zaragoza, whose discussion paper will deal with the consumption of dairy products in our per diem expenses, its relationship with the quality of life and its effects on health.
