1,162 students participate in the University of Navarra Science Weeks
The conference of Experimentation at Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry , Pharmacy and Human Nutrition and Dietetics brought together more than 200 students from 44 schools.
A total of 1,162 students have participated this year in the activities organized by the University of Navarra on the occasion of the Science Weeks 2010. Among other events, for two weeks the students attended talks on the history of stem cells, Alzheimer's disease, birds of prey, biodiversity and Chemistry forensics. They also made guided visits to research center Applied Medicine and the Museum of Natural Sciences of the academic center. They were also able to "touch" the Chemistry in an activity with live experiments and peculiar materials.
At the same framework the students attended the presentation of the III edition of Nutrivideo, the audiovisual contest of the School Pharmacy to promote good eating habits among young people. This year, the prizes of the competition will consist of an iPad staff and a computer for the center in the category of best video, and an interactive digital whiteboard for the high school that wins the award for the most viewed video on YouTube.
The Science School , for its part, awarded the prizes for its 2010 Science and Nature Photography Contest to Iñaki Azcoiti Yerro, for his work "La frontera del desierto"; Patricia Rodríguez Aranguren, for an image entitled "Prisma"; and Manuel de Gregorio Elizalde, for the photograph "El camaleón acuático".
DNA with Fairy and effervescent stones
The activities of the Science Weeks at the University of Navarra closed with the conference of Experimentation at Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry , Pharmacy and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, in which 200 students from 44 schools in Navarra, Aragon, Andalusia, La Rioja, Madrid, Balearic Islands and the Basque Country participated.
In them, students practiced obtaining DNA with Fairy, creating effervescent stones, seeing cell mitosis live or reproducing a lake in a laboratory. In "La Chemistry en casa" they had "extraordinary experiences with ordinary substances" and participated in an episode of "CSI Pamplona" on Chemistry forensics. In Pharmacy, finally, they faced the process of making a thermalgin; and in Nutrition they learned how to examine a healthy per diem expenses in a workshop that included the knowledge of body composition or the calories needed by each person.
