Navarre's museums, an educational opportunity

A thesis defended at the School of Education and Psychology addresses the role of Education in contemporary art museums in Navarra.

"The economic investment, technological improvements and the training of educators are key to improve the competitiveness of contemporary art museums in Navarra", says Ignacio Perlado. The author of the thesis "La Education en los museos de arte contemporáneo de Navarra", studied during the last four years the educational activity of five museums that contain works of contemporary art in Navarra, such as the Oteiza Museum in Alzuza, the Museum of Navarra and the University Museum of Navarra, both in Pamplona, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum in Estella and the Muñoz Sola Museum of Modern Art in Tudela. His goal was to check whether these museums, in addition to being responsible for the conservation of the works, also have as their main mission statement Education . To this end, she interviewed the heads of didactics and Education of each museum and concluded that Education is really present in the day-to-day life of the museums, since they have educational activities and people responsible for them.

This work, which brings together heritage, Education and art, addresses the need to improve the quality of technological tools in order to be competitive and adapt to the demands and mentality of the citizens of the 21st century.

The research asks whether the museum can be considered a space educational and what means are used to promote learning. In order to answer this question, a list of questions was drawn up which, by means of an interview, were formulated to those responsible for the educational area of each museum center. The analysis of the information collected, once the phase of research was completed, made it possible to obtain some results and to make a proposal to the museums of the strong points and aspects for improvement of each one, such as the economic investment in the Education and the training permanent of the educators who are exclusively dedicated to it or the need to improve the quality of the technological tools. "I hope that these conclusions of the work will contribute to future research and that the ideas presented will serve to establish the educational mission statement in museums and confirm that the future of museums depends to a large extent on their approach educational", said the doctor.
