More than a hundred professionals from around the world are participating in the XIX World Infographics Summit, held at the School of Communication of the University of Navarra. The awards, organized by the Spanish Chapter of the SND-E and based at the School, this year have 1,339 infographics published in 148 media from 29 countries. Specifically, the organization has received 1,075 works from 113 print media and 259 from 35 online media.

The opening was chaired by the dean of the School, Monica Herrero, and the president of the SND-E, Javier Errea. During the event, the director of the publishing house Index Book, Toni Canal, presented the annual Issue Malofiej 18, which includes the graphics awarded in the previous edition of the summit, as well as several articles on infographics.

The presentations position given by international professionals, such as Stephen Few, from Perceptual Edges; Haika Hinze, Art Director at Di Zeit (Germany); Matt Perry, director of infographics at The San Diego Union-Tribune (USA); Pablo Loscri, director of Infographics at Clarín (Argentina); Joe Ward, director of sports infographics for The New York Times; and Chiqui Esteban, manager of New Digital Narratives at lainformacion.com. Other speakers include academics such as Paolo Ciuccarelli (University of Milan), Ryan J. Sparrow (Ball State) and Geoff McGhee (Stanford).

The summit also included practical workshops for attendees. This year, the two usual sessions were reconverted into a single one under the name "Show, Don't Tell", which included a group and an individual exercise. Infographics proposals were submitted for three different media (paper, web and tablets or smartphones).

The Pulitzers of infographics

Since 1993, and as a tribute to the Argentine cartographer Alejandro Malofiej, a pioneer in the world of infographics, the School of Communication of the University of Navarra became the venue for the famous Malofiej awards, known as "the Pulitzers of infographics". Every year, Pamplona hosts the best infographics in the world, who present their work under the organization and supervision of the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SND-E), headed by Álvaro Gil (Errea Comunicación) during the course of the summit.

The initiative, which was promoted by two professors from the University, Juan Antonio Giner and Miguel Urabayen, was intended from the beginning not only to recognize the best infographics in media of the year, but also to train attendees through the multimedia workshop 'Interact, Don't Show!' and promote contact between them through the series of lectures that is part of the international summit.
