Zulema Altamirano, board member -advisor in the cabinet of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and director of the Women and Science unit in the ministry, has given an online session on the occasion of Women's Day, at the invitation of the group Women for Science and Technology of the University of Navarra.

Altamirano reviewed her professional career and highlighted the role of women scientists in Spain. One of the most interesting data commented the speaker is that Spain is above average of the European Union in percentage of female researchers (41% compared to 38%).

On the other hand Altamirano has highlighted that since 2018 there is a greater presence of women in decision-making positions but in her opinion it is still insufficient. In the academic field she points out that female rectors increased from 22% to 23%; female vice-rectors from 41% to 42%; and women at the head of a Public Organization of research (OPI) increased from 38% to 50%. "We need women to design the world and to be in decision making. We have to break those glass ceilings. Only by changing the way we do things will we change inequalities."

For Altamirano, inequality must be tackled from a social change in all directions, starting with concrete proposals in public policies -preventive and corrective measures- but also putting this reality on knowledge of society. "It will be of no use if those who have to implement the measures are not sensitized. The only way to change this is to raise awareness of equality in society".

The speaker has identified three challenges that society must pursue to reverse the current status : attract female talentresearcher in STEM fields and eliminate stereotypes associated with scientific careers; retain and develop this talent on equal terms; overcome gender bias, discrimination and harassment. "The model of degree program researcher clashes with the model of family because of their dedication to housework and caregiving."

Altamirano has launched a message of optimism for those women who are thinking of developing ascientific degree program : "It is very important to pursue your dreams and solve the obstacles. If you want to, you can.

Zulema Altamirano holds a PhD in Psychology and Master's Degree in Leadership and Public Management. She is currently board member -advisor in the cabinet of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and director of the Women and Science unit in the ministry.
