Folklore magazine has published a article by Ana Belén Martínez, professor of language and Culture of Modern language at ISSA School of Management Assistants. The study 'Formulaicity in Child Ballads as a Means to Express Assertiveness' focuses on unpacking long-held ideas of gender. focuses on overturning long-established ideas of gender.

Professor Martinez explains that in the ballads of subject popular, sung and rewritten on the fly on many occasions, women are depicted as active heroines who solve problems and even save men from danger, a stereotype of women as opposed to the damsel in distress presented in other medieval and modern traditions in Europe. "I don't want to say that it is the rule, but it is a substantial part of the oral tradition that has survived and is worth remembering."

The magazine was founded by the Folklore Society in 1889 and since then has been a pioneer and a point of reference letter for all scholars of popular culture in English.

Ana Belén has a PhD in English Philology in 2010 by the University of Oviedo. Her thesis was about a comparison between English ballads and Castilian romances and how the identity is told through the way the characters dress, hence getting published in Folklore makes her especially excited: "It has always been an inspiration source ".

She has been doing a research stay at King's College London since January: "I am reinforcing knowledge linked to my most recent research , focused on the construction of the autobiographical 'I' in relation to texts by young activists and women who come from countries where English is not the official language , but who resort to this language to fight for human rights and reach an international audience".
