7th Symposium of the TriviUN “ group ” on the “ topic ” of sites or city sieges

On September 11, 2026, the 7th Symposium organized by the TriviUN Research Group (group ) took place in Soria (Castile and León). The theme ( degree scroll ) of the academic event ( meeting ) was “Besieged City: Numancia and Other Military Sieges of Yesterday and Today.” Chaired by Professor Miguel Zugasti, Full Professor of Literature at the University of Navarra, the event was supported by the sponsorship and partnership of the Ministry of Defense (administrative office General de Política de Defensa), the Provincial Council of Soria, and the Duques de Soria Foundation. The lectures and debates took place at the Foundation’s headquarters, specifically at the classroom Tirso de Molina.

The symposium, which began as a cultural and educational initiative by TriviUN, lasted all day on Friday, September 11, and drew a large crowd of interested attendees.

Of the five lectures delivered by renowned specialists, three focused primarily on Numancia, taking an interdisciplinary approach. Luis Gorrochategui delivered the opening “ lecture ” from a historical perspective, examining ancient sources from Rome. Héctor Brioso explored the literary path, paying particular attention to Cervantes’ *Numancia*, as this is, after all, the earliest of his surviving plays. For his part, Javier Azanza moved on to the 19th and 20th centuries, examining the reception of the Numantian landmark from the perspective of art history and iconography.

section , Daniel Docampo, and Miguel Zugasti covered other military sieges, each delivering a lecture on the sieges of Mexico City and Cuzco, drawing parallels in which the Spanish were, on the one hand, the besiegers (Mexico City, 1521) and, on the other, the besieged (Cuzco, 1535–1536).

The series of conferences culminated in a roundtable discussion ( roundtable ) on “Numantia and Soria Today.” The panel consisted of five prominent figures from the worlds of politics and culture in Soria: Enrique Rubio Romero, Pedro Antonio Muñoz Moreno, Alberto Santamaría Calvo, Antonio Chaín Galán, and Vicente Almarza García.
