More than 100 experts in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology presented the main novelties and points core topic in the treatment and intervention of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), at framework of the XI workshop of update in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry on June 23rd.

The event was organized by the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit of the Clínica Universidad de Navarrathe Basque-Navarre Society of Psychiatry (SVNP), the Navarra Health Service, the Natividad Zubieta Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra.

This lecture series was aimed at professionals specialized in Psychiatry, Psychology and Pediatrics, as well as primary/secondary school teachers, counselors, social workers and parents of children suffering from this disease.

The goal of the workshop was to share knowledge in order to offer a comprehensive vision and move towards a more coordinated action. "At final, this course aims to provide a unifying vision of the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, a disorder suffered by between 5 and 7% of children," explained Dr. César Soutullo, director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit at Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

"In this year's edition we are focusing on the biological part (brain imaging), but we are also carrying out a evaluation of the treatments that show the best results in dealing with this pathology," explained Dr. Soutullo.

The specialist referred to the benefits for mental health of following the Mediterranean per diem expenses , the treatment based on Art Therapy, as well as the use of psychotherapies for the training of social skills. "They are children who neglect their per diem expenses and have become accustomed to failure, that is why it is important to find successful experiences with them", assured the specialist.

In addition, the speakers also discussed new developments and evidence in pharmacological treatment and the importance of early detection in dealing with the disease.

ADHD, a disorder suffered by 5-7% of children

Currently, between 5 and 7% of children suffer from ADHD and, in many cases, it continues into adulthood. ADHD, better known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is characterized by hyperactivity, attention problems and impulsivity. These symptoms lead to excessive physical activity, poor school performance, difficulty inhibiting impulses, behavioral and language disorders, and a very low attention Degree , which interfere negatively in academic performance and progression, social interaction with other children, adults and the family environment.

These complications cause a general performance below their intellectual capacity and potential and, in some cases, even generate depression and anxiety.

"Although 40-60% of children with ADHD will continue to have some of the symptoms into adulthood, with early diagnosis their complications can be prevented or at least controlled," said Dr. César Soutullo.
