Elena Barraquer: "When you operate, you not only give them back their sight, you give them back their life".

Dr. Elena Barraquer, from Clínica Barraquer and president of the Foundation that bears her name, participated in the second Alumni Meeting Catalunya with President Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero.

The conversation between the ophthalmologist and the President revolved around how one can impact society through the professional work ; in this case, cataract operations and the task professor and research of the University respectively. The two guests exchanged questions and answers and then moved on to a colloquium with the attendees.

Dr. Barraquer told how, since she was a child, she had seen her father and grandfather working as ophthalmologists: their eyes and knowledge at the service of those most in need. Later, Elena would take the helm again thanks to their example: "I discovered that with what I wanted to do, I could help many people".

For his part, President answered Barraquer's questions about the characteristics of a good university and the qualities they look for in their students. Sánchez-Tabernero emphasized that a university has to fulfill the three aims that constitute its raison d'être: to train professionals, to produce science and to carry out transfer activities, which are those tasks of service to society. Regarding the selection of students, he pointed out that "it is not easy; we want the University of Navarra to be the best place to study and this is made concrete in the variety of student body, international outreach. That is why, at present, we are at 30% international students, and along with that, head and heart". 

During the conversation, Dr. Barraquer gave some information data such as the fact that there are 39 million blind people in the world and 19 million of them might not be blind. "In African countries there are many difficulties, the first one, the lack of specialists. in Mozambique, for example, there are only 15 ophthalmologists. There was a man who told me after the operation: "Now I will be able to find work". 

Both guests were able to talk about the aspirations for their organizations. Dr. Barraquer dreams that many professionals will join the work of her foundation and be able to make her motto "no more cataracts" a reality. For his part, the President, with being able to have more funding for grants and research, and to start a building in Pamplona that will house the Museum of Natural Sciences.

One of the alumni present asked President what alumni need to do better. alumniSanchez-Tabernero replied that there is a lack of financial support from partnership to be able to carry out projects in the same way as is done in universities in the United States.

The meeting, which took place at the headquarters of IESEThe event, which took place at IESE, brought together a hundred alumni alumni from different graduating classes and gave them the opportunity to meet again and exchange experiences. They were all invited to the next Alumni Weekend, which will take place on October 5 at campus in Pamplona.
