Last February 27, took place the presentation of the "Program of volunteer hospitaleros" between the University of Navarra and the Friends of the Way of St. James of Estella. This initiative, which the association Jacobean also shares with the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) and the National University of Education a Distancia (UNED), is the first step of a broad project of volunteer activities that aims to be implemented in the future between the universities of the Camino and the associations of the French Way Federation, which is leading the Estella group.
Maxi Ruiz de Larramendi, president of the association; Román Felones, vice-president; and María Jesús Ruiz, board member ; reported on various issues related to the pilgrims' hospital managed by the institution, which responds to the model of traditional Jacobean hospitality, and is characterized, among other things, by the work volunteer. In this sense, they explained the figure of the volunteer hospitalero, who guides and attends to the pilgrim's needs, in addition to carrying out support tasks in the maintenance of the hostel.
The event was also attended by José Antonio Fernández and Pablo Martín Aguado, from the University of Navarra, to support the presentation of this program that makes possible a 15-day stay at the hostel to collaborate in the task of assisting pilgrims, as well as the agreement of its dissemination among students, professors and other professionals of the center.
