On February 24, the Magna classroom of the School of Theology of the University of Navarre hosted the presentation of the book Pastors, Bishops and Opus Dei. History and Environment of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross in Spain, 1928-1965, written by historian Santiago Martínez Sánchez.written by historian Santiago Martínez Sánchez. The event included a talk by César Izquierdo, professor of theology, who highlighted the relevance of the study for understanding the relationship between Opus Dei, diocesan priests and Spanish bishops in the context of the 20th century.
This book offers an in-depth and documented analysis of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross, founded by St. Josemaría Escrivá, and its role in the spiritual and human accompaniment of the secular clergy in Spain. Through exhaustive historical research , the author examines the beginnings of this society and its mission statement to strengthen the spiritual dimension of the priesthood, in a period in which various clerical associations with similar objectives emerged.
The book underscores St. Josemaría's concern to provide diocesan priests with an atmosphere of home and fraternity that would help them face the pastoral and human challenges of daily life. In this sense, the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross has served as a space of support for priests to harmoniously integrate their staff and ministerial life, living their vocation with fidelity to the Gospel.
With this work, Santiago Martínez Sánchez provides a new historical perspective on the relationship between the Church and Opus Dei in Spain, offering keys to understanding the role of this society in strengthening the diocesan clergy.
