Saving breastfeeding through a service-learning (APS) project
63 3rd year nursing students are participating in a project of training on breastfeeding. The activity, which will take place throughout academic year, includes group sessions, discussions at group, lectures, clinical case resolution and role playing. The aim of goal is for students to acquire knowledge on specific aspects of breastfeeding and to develop the skills and attitudes necessary for the performance of their professional work.
During the second semester the students will put on internship what they have worked on during the first semester attending to mothers and fathers who are immersed in the breastfeeding process and who voluntarily wish to attend sessions at training or request advice in relation to this topic. These workshops will be given in different associations through partnership with Tantaka, the University's solidarity time bank.
All activities will be tutored and guided by School Nursing teachers Maider Belintxon, Marta Vidaurreta, Esther Peña, midwife at the Clinic; Esperanza Berástegui, Sonia Villafañe and Ana Imízcoz, Pediatrics nurses also at the Clinic; and student interns Marta Belmonte and Irati Valencia. The activity, of a voluntary nature, complements the subjects "Nursing Care in Childhood and Adolescence", "Child NursingCare" and "Nursing Care in Adulthood IV"; and is part of the methodology professor of Service-Learning promoted by the University. The commitment to this educational methodology is part of the University'sHorizon 2020 project , and pursues promote, in an active way, learning that takes into account the social and environmental needs, identified by the students and teachers themselves.
The project is also part of the Healthyclassroom of the School of Nursing, an initiative that seeks to promote a culture of health in society through various activities of training and awareness.
