Fifty students of 5th and 6th grade of primary school participated last Friday, May 26th, in the I competition of Spelling, organized by the high school Pamplona. Miravalles- El Redín and the Schools of Education and Psychology y Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra.

The test had three phases: in the first one, the students had to face the dictation of a text -different for each course-, a dictation of three words that the students had to write on the blackboard, and a dictation by the jury of a word that the students had to write on a plastic board.

In the second phase, the students had to pass a spelling round, in which they went individually to the stage and the jury dictated a word to them.

The third and last sentence had a similar dynamic to the previous one. The 5th and 6th grade champions were Isabella Badilla and Juan Castillo, students from Miravalles and El Redín, respectively.

Finally, a test took place with the participation of the finalist and semifinalist of each course, and in which the 6th grade student Teresa Gutiérrez Sádaba won the final between both courses.

The prizes were a 20 euro gift voucher for the 5th place winner, a 30 euro gift voucher for the 6th place winner and a 50 euro gift voucher for the winner in both categories.

Origin and start-up

The preparation for the I competition Ortográfico started at the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year, motivated by the students of the School of Education and Psychology Helena Moro Cano and María Percaz Tina, who carried out their internship at the high school Miravalles and launched the "Spelling School". This is a methodology that transforms classic games into useful materials to work on spelling in a playful, active and motivating way for the students, with the aim of changing the students' mentality towards the use and study of spelling, so that they learn to value and respect it. The materials used for the "Spelling School" were created by the students of the university together with the financial aid of M.ª Ángeles Sánchez-Ostiz, professor in charge of the subject of "language castellana" and associate of the School of Education and Psychology.
