Living positively

Destroying is always easier than building. Making fun of something or someone can be fun -as long as the object of the mockery is not oneself, of course-. As an acquaintance of mine used to say: "Let's criticize, let's criticize, that criticizing unites a lot! We have recently experienced several cases of actions against the religious ideas of others.

It seems that some people have no better way to spend their time than attacking others and making fun of their beliefs: occupied university chapels, parodies of Holy Week processions or brotherhoods with blasphemous names. What a sad way to have fun!

While Benedict XVI promotes the "atrium of the Gentiles" to encourage dialogue between believers and non-believers, a rowdy minority decides to dispense with dialogue and have fun with easy and provocative insults. It is the difference between believing in the force of reason or using the irrational force of violence. There are those who are unable to distinguish between discussion on ideas and respect for people. Once again they have to come from outside to teach us a lesson.

A couple of weeks ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the presence of a crucifix in classrooms is not against any right. Quite the contrary: it is up to the States "to ensure, with neutrality and impartiality, the exercise of the various religions and creeds". An exercise of healthy tolerance, which deserves to be imitated by many.
