Animals may sense chemical changes prior to an earthquake

We just found out: NASA scientists and British scientists from the Open University have studied the behavior of Italian toads, which fled from their ponds before the earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009 killed 309 people.

Water-dwelling animals are sensitive to changes in their composition Chemistry. Some geologists had investigated it: NASA scientists have corroborated that rocks subjected to strong stresses release electrically charged particles. Charges in the form of ions cause headaches, nervousness, nausea..., raise the level of the stress hormone serotonin.

The fact is that in contact with the atmosphere they can produce luminescence, colored clouds, as we have verified before several earthquakes, lately they have been studied, recorded and filmed. In water, the process can evolve to the training of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). As we know, it affects the dissolved organic subject in ponds, converting harmless organic subject into substances that are toxic to animals.

Thus we could design new instruments to anticipate seismic disasters. This is not the only experience; the Chinese take the lead: since the Haicheng earthquake in 1975, several lines of research have since focused their efforts on observations of fleeing snakes, even in winter temperatures.

A retired researcher of the Chinese seismological service: Sun Shihong, advises in conferences and publications to observe the behavior of reptiles, rats, domestic animals, changes in the taste of well water...; being aware of these anomalies has saved many lives. As early as 373 BC, we find written references in Greece.

A very popular theory in California, in constant transformation, proposes a correlation between the issue of stray pets and the issue of earthquakes in the area of the San Francisco Bay.

And we, do we do something about it? The seismological service of the IGN, collected several calls of anomalous behavior of domestic species before the Lorca earthquakes, agitated dogs, fleeing cats, in the pond of Totana stampeding birds, near Torrevieja, on the trace of the killer fault, a caller alerted two minutes before the anomalous behavior of his nymph (an Australian parrot), she was going crazy in her cage, it is a very quiet species.

This research field is now offered to us on a platter in El Hierro, to take advantage of such potential, and thus join these important international research, would be an investment in research and development+I at the height of prestigious organizations such as NASA, the US Geological Survey, the University of Berkeley, the seismological service of China or the Open University UK, and many others around the world in which a Spanish student participates ... But of course, I am sure that more than one of those who manage those little Spanish letters of the research and development+I, this makes them smile.
