Marriage, family and social transformation

Today's society seems, in some respects, like a train going nowhere, as depicted in the Korean film "Snowpiercer" (Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer, 2013).

The film is set in the not too distant future, when climate change almost wiped out all life on earth. Only the passengers of that train, driven by what they call "the eternal motion engine", survive. Here we can see a critique of technology if it were to become a pseudo-religion that puts a gulf between the poor and the rich, violently subjugates many people and their families, and separates them from their children to indoctrinate and exploit them. Yet, somewhere there beats the hope of survival, after a hard battle led by a redeemer.

A truly saving train today is that of the Christian family, with its important role in society, which should be highlighted in this era of new evangelization. To this end, it is also good to consider what educational attitudes are best, within the family, in relation to political, economic and civic life, and to the new communication technologies.

1. Family, new evangelization and culture. In the first place, it is worth remembering that faith must also become culture in the family. We have examples in the first Christians: the centurion Cornelius, the first Gentile who, after receiving the Apostle Peter in his house, converted to Christianity and with him his whole family; the same happened with the jailer of Paul and Silas in Philippi, and with Lydia, a merchant of purple, the first convert of Europe.

Today, as in the past, Christian families are expected to make a substantial contribution to evangelization; a contribution that only they can make with other families, in their neighborhoods, etc. But in order to achieve this, families need to be formed, listened to and encouraged by Christian educators, catechists and priests.

A concrete aspect of this contribution of families to evangelization is their involvementin the Education of the faith that parents themselves impart with the financial aid of religion teachers, priests, catechists and other educators.

In the school environment, it is appropriate that this Education in faith takes place in relation to all subjects, to help students to know how to configure the relationship between faith and reason, between religion and other sciences, so that faith enlightens and animates their present and future activities, in the horizon of a successful life that involves the dimension of service to society. 

This can best be achieved if there is a close partnership between school and family. Religion, for those students whose parents choose it, should be one of the most important subject , as assessable as science, mathematics or languages.

All this requires an adequate professional qualification of religion teachers and that they have, like all good educators, "educational passion".

When their children arrive at the university, parents should be attentive to place them in the best possible context. During this period educational core topic for the students, they should be able to prolong the Education in the faith that they received previously and develop it in harmony with the knowledge and human maturity that they acquire.

To this purpose Catholic-inspired universities can offer elements that broaden this dimension of every human training . It would be very good if in the university the anthropological and ethical foundations of life were taught in a way that is compatible with a Christian vision of the world and of the person - in an atmosphere of respect for students of other religions - and also if students could opt for some subject of a theological character (as in fact happens in the majority of American and German universities, etc.). The atmosphere of the university and the place of accommodation help a lot to develop this Education. Many colleges and university clubs maintain a good offer in this line and strive to obtain scholarships that cover all or part of the students' expenses. These institutions usually have priests who serve the Education of the faith through the activities proper to chaplaincy: proposal Christian of the meaning of life, advertisement of the faith, liturgical celebrations, training of conscience for a work at the service of the common good, promotion of the Christian apostolate and the works of mercy, etc.

Family and attitudes towards political, economic and civic life. Christian families should educate their children with the conviction that to be Christian is not to take refuge in a "comfortable" life, individualistic or indifferent to the problems of others and of the world, which we are all committed to improving. 

Lay Christians in particular are committed to being the salt and light of society, especially in their life staff and family, professional and cultural life.

For this reason, pessimistic and cynical attitudes, views and comments about politics should be avoided in families. On the contrary, children and young people should grow up in an environment that helps them to understand the high level of service that a life dedicated to the common good entails. Along with a realistic and hopeful vision, which counts on the financial aid of God, of his providence and of his grace, it is fitting that in families, in schools and parishes, they should be taught to present the Christian roots of their culture in contemporary terms. John Paul II said when he left Spain in 2003: "One can be modern and profoundly faithful to Jesus Christ". The holy Polish pope also taught that it is possible to have a right conscience and aspire to inform the world with the love of God, so that public tasks can be a platform for the exercise of a true "social and political charity".

Similar attitudes should be transmitted with respect to Economics. The example and coherence of the fathers and mothers of families in social and economic issues, in the problems of integral development and human promotion, are fundamental when it comes to sowing this sense of fraternity among men and women and peoples (cf. encyclical Caritasin veritate, 29-VI-2009), this need to change the economic paradigms (cf. encyclical Caritasin veritate, 29-VI-2009).

In the family one learns to do without things that are even necessary, if the neighbor or the one who knocks at the door asking for financial aid asks for it from the indigence. Only in this way will children be forged as upright citizens, ready to serve the common good. Our society needs citizens raised in a family that is an authentic school of gratuitousness and trust, of solidarity and fraternity.

As for the new communication technologies, families also have an important role to play here. Above all, they should value the positive aspects of these media, as a way of opening up communication between people and therefore as possible ways to deepen also the Education of faith (cf. Benedict XVI,speech to committee Pontifical Council for Social Communications, 28-II-2011).

Attention must also be paid to the practical problems and difficulties that the new technologies entail. Hence the need for prudent measures to protect those who can be harmed by these technologies, especially children and young people. In the face of scientific and technological progress, however, it is worth remembering that the only medium- and long-term solution deadline is the good training in the values that make people greater, especially their openness to God and to others. This is a field where new opportunities and challenges are continually arising, and where we can all help each other and families.
