Building a better world

Although long plane rides have their share of discomfort, they allow us to do unusual things like listening attentively to a song. On one of my last trips, while listening to Heal the world, by Michael Jackson, I was struck by the fragment "Make a little space to make a better world". This phrase made me think of social entrepreneurs, people who create companies with high social value that, in addition to providing goods and services to their customers, contribute to making the world a better place. They are people who dedicate time and effort, with a salary that allows them to live very austerely, to provide opportunities to people with any physical, psychological or social difficulty subject .

In this society that often idolizes people of questionable abilities and qualities, it would be appropriate to generalize initiatives aimed at admiring and supporting alternative, positive and generous models. I am thinking, for example, of a well-known laywoman who has helped to create several schools and services in some villages in Burundi; or of a missionary who has been doing the same in different African countries for more than forty years; or of a friend who went to India to work in Vicente Ferrer's project ; but I am also thinking of people who work in our towns and cities in associations, foundations and companies helping people in need or providing them with job opportunities. A few weeks ago I was able to talk to a man who had lived in Barcelona airport for.... seven years! Now, thanks to financial aid of the Fundació Formació i Treball, he is reintegrated into the labor market and enjoys decent living conditions. I could cite more examples, such as those of social enterprises that give work to groups of complex placement. Or companies from very diverse sectors that seek to be economically profitable but highlighting their social aspect.

In addition to reordering our list of admirers, it would be desirable that we collaborate more in making the world a better place. There are many possibilities: dedicating time to volunteer activities, collaborating in social projects, contributing resources, buying products and services from companies with a social vocation, and so on. We are all aware that the world we live in is not a minimally dignified world for many people. The needs of many people, some of whom are close to us, are growing, while resources remain the same or diminish. It is certain that most of us can contribute something more to achieve the dream expressed in the beautiful song.
