Julio Clúa, Professor of the University of Navarra School of Architecture
Javier Carvajal: in memoriam
Javier Carvajal Ferrer, perhaps the last of a generation of architects difficult to repeat, has left us. A long illness had slowly and gradually deprived us of his company, and he had been plunged into a complex reality. A reality that he always strove to transform from Architecture and in this endeavor he paved the way for many of us who were his students, enthused by the knowledge and the commitment with which he exercised his teaching; of the example and coherence of his work; of his innovative capacity; of his energetic kindness and of his generous and passionate submission by and for Architecture, an effort that perhaps has passed him by invoice.
His overwhelming personality as an intellectual, as an architect and as a teacher leaves a work recognized with merits, awards and personal distinctions, perhaps the ones he valued least, but his work professor -as important or more important than the first- bequeaths several generations of exceptional architects, plans for programs of study and reforms of the methods of teaching that will last beyond his departure. There is only deep gratitude for such effort and appreciation for his report.
