It's not about commanding, but about inspiring

We are sailing in very choppy winds. What should we do in our companies in the face of these changing and uncertain scenarios? Where to turn? Where to start? Are we lost? Not lost, but perhaps disoriented, bewildered and somewhat dazed by the harsh and unrelenting blows we have received in recent times. Now more than ever, leaders must emerge: visionaries, daring, who in complex times lead, often going off the beaten path, trying what has not been tried before. These are the essential ones. Enlightened people who have a good "what", a good "why" and who find an epic, heroic "how" of great social value.

I have the impression that we are facing an evident regression and here I see a paradox emerging: extraordinary technological advances and progress and, in many other fields, at the same time, a worldwide deficit of global vision and excellent leadership.

Leading in today's complex environment is no easy task. Uncertainty due to pandemics, demographic and social changes, the impact of technology, globalization, new generations, etc. Changes in the competitive environment, in consumer habits and preferences, in processes and operations, and in regulations. Some you can see coming, but others you can't. We must always be alert, and that means taking the time to think in the long term deadline and to question how the pillars that support the competitiveness of each of our businesses may evolve in the future.

When a leader awakens people's consciences, and I am not referring to manipulating consciences but the opposite, to being an activator, a provocateur of consciences, people are moved, enthusiastic and committed. The leader must understand that his mission statement is not to command, but to inspire in pursuit of a common purpose .

A leader must be exemplary and convey through his actions and words that he is driven by transcendent motives, so that the rest of the organization also yearns to be driven by these greater motivations. This honest performance gives him full authority in the long run. I believe that exemplarity is the only way to achieve authority, the ultimate goal of leadership, always acting with maximum balance.

The leader must be competent. A leader is always inspired by the excellence of the well done work , of the well accomplished task. If in your companies only the bosses are leaders, then there is a big problem. A leader must be able to see further and leave behind the managerial myopia that is so harmful to companies.

The leader grows and makes his environment grow. With a spirit of service, taking his ego out of the equation so that the symphonies of talents manage to exploit to the maximum their best personal and professional versions, constantly creating opportunities for all. A leader is a person who holds the value of responsibility. He knows that his leadership gives him power and he uses that power for the benefit of others. The correct use of this power fertilizes, enhances and strengthens the leader's authority figure. A leader, when faced with difficult moments, adverse scenarios, crises or maximum tension, redirects that energy and is capable of converting it into possibilities and advantages, taking advantage of changing circumstances.

In times as uncertain as these, it is more necessary than ever to have a lighthouse to guide us. A leader with character to defend that which is uncomfortable to defend, but absolutely necessary to protect.

There is an urgent need for the emergence of leaders capable of establishing much more agile roadmaps, indicating where they want to go and defining their own capabilities, but tolerating changes and reformulations during their execution.

I share some notes:

- People-centered management behavior.

- To lead is to innovate.

- To lead is to analyze and solve problems.

- To lead is to communicate with persuasion, clarity and with an exciting, even epic message that generates enthusiasm, motivation and, above all, alignment.

- Leading with demanding and ambitious objectives.

- Promoting change and being agents of change.

Finally, a central aspect is to prioritize the important from the urgent. And sometimes this task is not easy. The fundamental exercise of thinking and working on the future without being subjected to the stress of urgency. The strategic vision flees from the short term deadline.

Lead with sharp vision: No to pyramidal or hierarchical leadership, yes to expansive leadership! Lead with charisma, with influence, with inspirational motivation, with individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation. Lead with disarticulation of individual egos. Lead with generosity and collaboration. Lead with greatness and magnanimity and lead with contagious joy.
