Twitter, Spanish-style rebellion?

If Ortega were to write La Rebelión de las Masas today, he would not do without the social networks of the Internet. The massive electronic convocation would be one of the keys to his sociological analysis.

Since last weekend in Spain, while the electoral campaign is being held with the official candidates, many citizens are demonstrating on their own. goal They are protesting against the social and economic status , against politicians and bankers.

More than one analyst wonders how it is possible that until now there have been no mobilizations, when five million unemployed are on the horizon. Is the spontaneous call a response? It seems to gather more people than the unions on May 1st. Is it a first awakening that will disappear after the electoral fever or will it become a tsunami that will sweep our social horizon?

The Spanish skepticism and the strength of the institutions, including the European ones, make us suspect that the spring cry will become water under the bridge. In Madrid there were more people in the Pradera de San Isidro. But Spain has an anarchoid streak not to be despised. It is prone to utopia.

Hemingway defined our Civil War as the last one fought for ideals. For that reason, this hint cannot be thrown on deaf ears. An indication (the Twitter demonstration) to which we can add that politicians are the last or the penultimate in social acceptance, according to the CIS polls. The cry of those gathered was: Long Live Participatory Democracy, Down with Representative Democracy; and the guarantors of the latter, the parties, have to reflect.

The bourgeois rebellion of the Transition is disappointing. The parties must be aware. It is not enough with the primaries (many under suspicion of manipulation of the apparatus); it is necessary to open up and find channels of direct participation.

But, above all, it is necessary to make effective and efficient policies, to transmit cleanliness, honesty and transparency. Otherwise, where will the tsunami reach?
