Unprecedented decision?
What is the significance of the fact that Benedict XVI retains the title of His Holiness?
-It is of no great significance. We must remember that it is not a official document, but it is limited to being a treatment. We are dealing with a new and exceptional status , because in 700 years there has not been a Withdrawal. We do not have a praxis in this regard, so now is the time to make decisions. Obviously, if we had had immediate precedents, we would have more experience. What is certain is that, until now, treatments such as His Holiness have been reduced exclusively to referring to the Roman Pontiff. However, the Patriarchs of the East are addressed as His Beatitude. Perhaps, it could be thought that the more appropriate treatment would be that of His Eminence, but it seems correct to me.
Will his cardinal status be maintained?
I am inclined to think so, but many other experts believe that it is not possible because, at the moment he makes his Withdrawal effective, he would become bishop emeritus of Rome and would cease to be a cardinal. The cardinal's role is to assist the Holy Father, so this status would lapse. Perhaps, this position is the most reasonable, because the very meaning of the cardinalate official document is centered on assisting the Pope and electing the Roman Pontiff, two functions that he will abandon. However, from the point of view of cardinal dignity, this condition could be maintained.
