Juan Manuel de Prada: "The Education is the constitutive act of civilisation".

"The Education is the constitutive act of civilization, what characterizes a full life and justifies it in the face of the past". This was stated by the writer Juan Manuel de Pradaat the University of Navarra. The literary critic and columnist Juan Manuel de Prada also compared the solid Education to a house that has been built over several generations, "each generation contributing its grain of sand, never modifying the general structure".

In this way, he encouraged students, possible tenants of these houses, to leave their mark and explore the world with criteria without forgetting the importance of the past. The writer's lecture inaugurated the Foro Universidad de Navarra (FORUN), a meeting organized by students. The event was also attended by Tomás Gómez-Acebo, Vice President Alumni, and Assumpta Chacón, PPE student (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) and leader of the student team at congress.

The key to that house, the writer said, is the Education received that allows access to knowledge. "This transmission is basic. We receive a bequest, we take care of it and try to improve it, and then we give it to those who come after us," he explained. The "key", moreover, needs someone to hand it over and someone to take it in. Thus, he spoke of the figures of the master and disciple and recalled that "we have to fight to be disciples, not pupils", to open up to the world and have an understanding of reality.

The training of a master nurtures the personality of a student disciple. This is the only way, Prada said, to avoid the "repeated, stereotyped people" that are created in a liquid society. "The Education, therefore, is something that is received, preserved and improved, always in relation between the one who teaches and the one who learns," he concluded.

Following this year's FORUN topic , "Navigating. In Search of a Solid Education in a Liquid Society," he noted that "the heart of all solid Education in liquid times is that life has meaning, that there is a worldview that presents us with the possibility of understanding the world."

He also cited the lack of relevance of what we have been in the past as something characteristic of a liquid society. "Only its knowledge allows us to have a comprehensive view of reality and to continue building the future," he stressed.

Forum of the University of Navarra (FORUN)

The University of Navarra Forum is an annual congress by alumni for alumni. It is a space where participants can reflect and dialogue about university values as well as issues affecting our world. FORUN fosters the relationship between professors and students from different majors to reflect on values related to the person and culture. The congress seeks to enhance the interdisciplinary training and find positive and creative answers to the issues facing our society.
