Jon Lerga, student second year of high school program of IES Sancho III el Mayor de Tafalla, is the winner of the regional phase of the International Biology Olympiad, which was held on February 20 at the University of Navarra.

In second place was Diego Galán, a second year student of high school program from high school San Ignacio de Pamplona. Ana Castiella, who is in her first year of high school program at the same high school, won third place.

In total, more than 65 students took the test that gives access to the national phase of the Olympiad, which will take place in Valencia from March 25 to 28. There, four first prizes and four second prizes will be awarded, whose winners will be able to prepare for the international phase with a stay at the research center Médica Aplicada (CIMA ) and at the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra.

The first four winners from each country will be part of the team that will go to the International Biology Olympiad, scheduled to take place in Changwon City (Korea) between July 12 and 18. Likewise, the four runners-up in the national phase will participate in the IV Ibero-American Biology Olympiad, to be held in Lima (Peru).

Examination subject test and question of development

The test, organized by the association Olimpiada Española de Biología (OEB), consisted of 75 questions subject test and one question development, belonging to the syllabus of first and second of high school diploma in different areas: Biochemistry , Evolution and Diversity, Cytology, Metabolism, Histology, Physiology and Anatomy Animal, Reproduction and Genetics, and Microbiology and Immunity. For this exam, students did not need additional preparation beyond that required for the programs of study de high school diploma or the university entrance exam.
