Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Msgr. José Horacio Gómez, doctorate from the School of Theology of the University of Navarra, as the new Archbishop of Los Angeles (USA).

Archbishop José Horacio Gómez was born in Monterrey (Mexico) on December 26, 1951. He received his licentiate degree at Philosophy and diploma holder in Public Accounting at the National University of Monterrey, Mexico, in 1975. He was ordained a priest of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross on August 15, 1978. He studied theology at the University of Navarra, where he received his doctorate in 1980.

From 1980 to 1987 he was professor at a high school and a school in Mexico and also worked as General Manager for the Fatima Youth of Office of the Dean of the Diocese of Monterrey (1985-1987). Since 1987 he resided in Texas, primarily in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. In 1999 he became Vicar of the Texas Delegation of the Prelature of Opus Dei. In addition, since 1991 he has been a member of association National Hispanic Priests, of which he has served twice as president.

Appointed Titular Bishop of Belal and Auxiliary Bishop of Denver (Colorado) on January 23, 2001, he was ordained bishop on March 26. He also served from 2001 to 2003 as President of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver and since 2004, pastor of Mother of God (Denver), and moderator of the Curia of the Diocese.

On December 29, 2004, he was appointed Archbishop of San Antonio and in 2010, Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (USA). He has also been a member of several committees of the Episcopal lecture and chairman of the Commission on Migration and the Task Force on the Spanish Bible.
