On Wednesday, February 16, Professor Jean-Baptiste Guillon gave the seminar of Philosophy "The metaphilosophy of common sense". As he explained, "this research is not only a article I have in preparation or a precise argument, but rather the general framework of my whole research for the fifteen years to come".

The metaphilosophy of common sense refers reference letterto an epistemic system of beliefs and principles that constitute the universal starting point. It arises as a response to the scepticism, prevalent in modernity, which seeks to question the very instructionsof common sense.

This Philosophy manages to reverse the burden of the test at discussion against scepticism: if something is taken as common sense, this perception is solidified as a valid starting point and, in order for it to be discarded, the sceptic has to provide a counter-argument.

Although Thomas Reid (1764) is known as the first to present this Philosophy, Professor Guillon finds his precursor in the sensus naturae communis of the late scholastic Philosophy : the Catholic Church has a tradition of common sense, which begins when Claude Buffier (1724) designed an epistemological system twenty years before Reid and very similar to his.

From this, Jean-Baptiste poses the following question: Can the Philosophy of common sense be considered a valid Christian Philosophy ? The answer, already contained in the beginning of this Philosophy, is that it is possible. The foundations of common sense constitute a sufficient basis to serve as a preamble to faith.
