"From the archaeological record to the museum: the path of history. programs of study in homage to Mercedes Unzu Urmeneta". It is the degree scroll of a recently published work, which aims to recognize the research career of Mercedes Unzu, one of the most influential archaeologists of Navarre in recent times.

Edited by EUNSA, in its "History" collection, and coordinated by Javier Martínez Sarasate and Javier Andreu, of the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra, and by María Jesús Peréx, of the Universidad Nacional de Education a Distancia (UNED), this monograph brings together a series of works by prehistorians, historians of Antiquity, archaeologists, epigraphers, linguists, medievalists and architects, and provides some novelties related to the archaeological culture and science of Navarra.

From the Bronze Age, through the Roman period, to the Middle Ages and the industrial era, the volume offers an overview of the archaeological discoveries made in recent decades in different areas of Navarre, such as the Bronze Age geminated vase from La Noria (Buñuel), the silver bowl from tomb 152 of the necropolis of El Castillo (Castejón), the Roman key of Bonafonte (Ujué) or the villa of Arellano (Estella). It also addresses broader issues, such as the work in the cave of Abauntz (Arraitz Orkin), the ancient epigraphy of Navarre, child burials, or the religiosity of the queens of Navarre in the eleventh century.

As Javier Andreu, Full Professor of Ancient History, director of the Diploma in Archaeology of the University of Navarra, and one of the editors of the volume, explains, "this tribute is an act of justice for who has been a pioneer in the Archaeology of Navarra". In addition, he points out, "the book, with the novelties it brings and the balance of almost half a century of archaeological research in Navarra, is a good sample of what is the "path of History", of how archaeological science and the sciences of Antiquity help us to know ourselves better".

The work was presented on March 13 at the Museum of Navarra. The meeting brought together numerous experts in the field of archaeology of the Ebro Valley, who wanted to embrace the honored colleague. Accompanied also by family and friends, Unzu expressed her emotion for the affection received and thanked the recognition that, with this publication, has been made to her academic and professional career, dedicated to the study and enhancement of our heritage.

A graduate of the University of Navarra, archaeologist Mercedes Unzu (Pamplona, 1949) began her professional activity at School of Philosophy and Letters of the academic center. In 1972, she began to collaborate with the Museum of Navarra, an institution to which she has been closely linked throughout her professional career.

Founder and director of Gabinete Trama, dedicated to the realization of historical and archaeological programs of study , mainly in Pamplona, Unzu has been manager of the archaeological monitoring in the works of the place del Castillo and the redevelopment works of the Old Quarter of the city, among others. He is a specialist in protohistory and Romanization, particularly in ceramics, and has also studied aspects of Roman mining and the archaeology of the Bárdenas Reales.
