"All sects have a religious sense. What they do not have is a Christian sense. In fact, their nature reflects man's need to feel identified with a religion". This was confirmed at the University of Navarra by Manuel Guerra, who gave a lecture on "The religious sense and the sects".

This expert, who has dealt with 1,500 groups in his "Dictionary of Sects," explained that "man always needs a religion. Whether he is an atheist or agnostic, he is religious. If his religion does not fulfill him, he will necessarily look for another or a substitute, whether in sub-religions or sects. But one must always find that meaning in life".

For example," he continued, "there are young people capable of dying for worshipping the body, and they reach anorexia and bulimia. Our God will be what we consecrate ourselves to".

Against sects, encourage a critical spirit

Manuel Guerra also thinks that in today's society man is increasingly vulnerable to a cult. And his remedy to prevent the entrance in groups of this subject is the critical spirit: "It is necessary to teach to read, watch TV, listen to the radio and think critically. If one is a Christian, this criterion will be taught with faith. If one is Catholic, faith will be interpreted in the light of the Church. According to a popular saying, 'He who does not think is thought'. Today's paganism seeks people of this subject, who do not reason, in order to tame them. In a sect this activity also usually takes place. And young people feel welcome in these small groups, because the most important thing is to feel wanted, loved".

Few people who are happy," he continued, "or who try to be saints will fall into a sect. In Spain, a Catholic who is well formed, who has an inner vibration and prayer life, is in no danger. But this aspect must be treated with care because there are more and more 'social' Catholics, who go to weddings, baptisms.... And they lack a true Catholic sense".

Prof. Guerra also bet on dialogue and rebellion against sectarian groups: "We have to rebel because paganism wants to fill us with filth. We have to rebel because paganism wants to fill us with filth. Let it not happen again what happened to the Ugandan sect, which led them like lambs to the slaughter".
