Juan Chapa, appointed director of the department of programs of study Biblical and Church History
The new department is the result of the merger of the Departments of Sacred Scripture and Historical Theology.
The School of Theology has created the department of programs of study of Biblical and Church History, fruit of the merger of the Departments of Sacred Scripture and Historical Theology. The President of the University, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, has entrusted Professor Juan Chapa with the task of directing the new department.
To date, the Departments of Sacred Scripture and Historical Theology were directed by Professors Vicente Balaguer and Fermín Labarga, respectively. Vicente Balaguer will continue with his work professor and research at School and Fermín Labarga will go on to direct the high school Superior of Religious Sciences of the University, replacing José Manuel Fidalgo.
Juan Chapa holds a PhD in Theology from the University of Navarra, a PhD in Classical Philology from the University of Seville and a PhD in Greek Papyrology from the University of Oxford. He has been director of research (2004-10) and Dean of the School of Theology (2010-19). He is the author of 17 books and numerous articles for research. He also belongs to international institutions such as the Society for the Study of the New Testament, the association International Papyrologists and the association Bíblica Española (ABE).
He has also been Visiting Professor of the British Academy at Oxford University. His areas of research focus primarily on the New Testament and papyrology. He was Dean of the School of Theology between the years 2010-2019 and has been one of the promoters of the Holy Bible at the University of Navarra.
