This University professor has studied probabilistic models of mortality in patients admitted to Intensive Care Units.

In 1990 Jokin de Irala was invested as Doctor of Medicine at the University of Navarra. This summer he has obtained his second cap: doctorate in Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts (USA). After four years of teaching and research work at this American center, the professor from the University of Navarra defended his final project .

His thesis has focused on the study of probabilistic models of mortality in patients admitted to Intensive Care Units. Jokin de Irala explains the applications of this research: "These models serve, for example, to give a prognosis to the patients' relatives or to perform quality control of these hospital units".

Dr. De Irala is also Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Dundee (Scotland) and has an extensive background professor. In addition to his experience as a professor at the University of Navarra, he has taught at the universities of Cordoba, Tufts (Boston, USA) and the University of Massachusetts. His research work has led to the direction of 5 doctoral thesis , the publication of 3 books, 11 book chapters, 42 articles in scientific journals and the presentation of 50 papers and communications at conferences.

Back in Pamplona, Jokin de Irala has resumed his work at the Epidemiology and Public Health Unit of the University of Navarra. The professor has participated in the new edition of a new edition of guide on Biostatistics and is about to revise another book on General Epidemiology. However, one of his main challenges for the 2000/2001 academic year is a prospective study on lifestyles and health that is being carried out among graduates of the University of Navarra (project SUN).
