This year, Chemistry and art, bioclimatic architecture or medical machines will be the protagonists of some of the conferences organized by the University of Navarra on the occasion of the Science, Technology and Innovation Weeks 2011.

This year, in addition, the School of Architecture joins the events traditionally organized by the School of Sciences with five conferences and three practical workshops. These will take place from November 9 to 11 and 14 to 17 at the laboratory of Building of the School and will be entitled 'essay safety against the risk of falls. Determination of slip resistance on wet surfaces', 'Determination of mechanical characteristics in steels for construction. essay of traction' and 'Characterization of soils by means of sounding with dynamic penetration equipment'.

For its part, the School of Sciences will organize conference of experimentation in Biology, Biochemistry , Chemistry, Nutrition and Pharmacy and the workshop"Touch the Chemistry", with experiments aimed at students from high school diploma. The Sciences Building will also host three exhibitions: "From Alchemy to Chemistry", "FOTCIENCIA08" and "80 years of the Big-Bang (Georges Lemaître)".

Meanwhile, the Museum of Natural Sciences, which houses more than 9,000 specimens of different species of animals and minerals, and the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) can also be visited during these two weeks of activities.

80 years of the Big-Bang

Among the informative conferences organized by the University of Navarra from November 9 until November 17, Ana Sánchez-Ostiz, director of the Master's Degree in design and management Environmental Buildings (MDGAE), will speak about bioclimatic architecture and zero-emission buildings; or Antonio Aretxabala, geologist of department of Building and laboratory of Building, who will give a talk at the Planetarium of Pamplona on 'Architectural consequences of the seismic movements of Lorca'.

For his part, Adrián Durán, researcher of department of Chemistry and Edaphology, will show the work of a chemist in a museum like the Louvre. Likewise, the Navarre physicist Javier Tejada, award Príncipe de Viana de la Cultura and award Nacional de research, will address the role of quantum mechanics in medical machines; and Dominique Lambert, biographer of Lemaître, will review the 80 years that have passed since the publication of the Big-Bang theory.

Finally, the scientific talks of knowledge dissemination will be completed with "What the genome says about you", at position by the professor of Genetics Javier Novo, which will take place at the Planetarium of Pamplona on November 10; the demonstration of work with birds of prey by the doctor in Biology Luis Lezana on Friday, November 11; and the submission of awards of the Science and Nature photography contest, which this year celebrates its fourth edition.
