A member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy believes it is "necessary and urgent" that developing countries development invest in research

Antonio Monge, professor of the University, participates in an international project on the research in the development of the peoples.

"It is necessary and urgent that the societies of the South find their development, and one way to achieve this is by participating in the research. If they do not do research, their companies and universities will always be dependent, and the gap between the North and the South will become deeper and deeper". This is the premise of the study "research and development of the peoples. A new proposal: Reversal of models" being carried out by Professor Antonio Monge Vega, director scientist at the research center in Applied Pharmacobiology of the University of Navarra and member of issue of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy.

The project, in which chemical experts from different countries also participate, has been promoted by IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry ), a association of 1919 that groups more than 300,000 experts belonging to the societies of Chemistry of 61 countries. Specifically, the professor is an elected member and manager of the IUPAC Section of research and development of Medicines for Developing Countries development.

The status at the beginning of a new millennium," explains Dr. Monge, "is that there are some societies, those in the north, that develop the research, and there are other societies, those in the south, where hardly any investment is made. To condemn these peoples not to do research because the North already does it, as some people claim, is a tutorial and unfair approach. Moreover, by developing these societies scientifically, a possibility is offered so that their citizens can find their destiny without having to move."

According to the expert, "until now, students from developing countries development have received scholarships to train for a period of time in centers and universities in developed countries; this, which is positive, causes associated problems, since they are often trained in techniques that they do not find in their own country when they return. On the other hand, scientific congresses are always held in developed countries, so the participation of developing countries is poor development ".

The academic proposes in the study what he called "reversing the models". "Instead of the south coming to the north, the north should go to the south. The idea is that a professor from a northern university should go to a southern university and teach there for a period of time; that congresses should also be held in these countries, so that the influence on the academic and social environment will always be much greater; that scholarships should be offered to professionals to go to the south to teach, since this would benefit many more students than those who have the possibility of being trained in other countries".

Antonio Monge points out that "contributing to the scientific and technological development of southern societies is essential at this time, and one way of making this possible may be through this inversion of models".

"Let the north go south," not the other way around.
