On the occasion of World Kidney Day, students from Schools of Nursing and Medicine were raising funds for the purchase of hemodialysis equipment for the Monkole Hospital in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo). This project, led by the Friends of Monkole Foundation, contemplates not only the acquisition of the technical equipment, but also the training of the hospital's staff .

Dr. Nuria García, director of the Nephrology Department at Clínica Universidad de Navarra, and coordinator of project , says that Monkole currently "does not have the resources necessary to perform hemodialysis on patients who, admitted mainly for infectious and cardiovascular pathologies, develop acute renal failure". She adds that "according to data provided by the hospital, between one or two patients per month could benefit from this acute dialysis criterion".

"We are very fortunate to live in a world with first-rate hospital care, capable of meeting all health needs. In other areas, lack of resources can limit a patient's life because they do not have access to temporary dialysis. As a student, it is a great opportunity to be part of this project." explains Laura Grávalos, a third-year nursing student. "Nephrology is a area of healthcare interest because of the negative impact on global health right now. Since I rotated, I have been very interested and I have decided to support this project because it offers dialysis to patients who need it temporarily and, because they live in an underdeveloped area , do not have access to it," says Ignacio Arrarás, a sixth-year medical student.
