"The essence of women must be marked in what they paint". This was stated by the painter Antonio Lopez in the Civican Auditorium during the colloquium that he held together with Juan Jose Aquerreta and Isabel Quintanilla on 'The presence of women in the group of the realists of Madrid'. The artist is teaching this week at the University of Navarra the Painting Workshop Masters of Figuration.

Regarding the role of women in painting, and more specifically in the group of the realists of Madrid, he pointed out that "women have things to say, that only they can say". In this sense, he wanted to mention his wife and said: "When I saw her painting near me I was shocked, because I realized that she had something valuable".

Likewise, the painter Isabel Quintanilla spoke of the little diffusion that was made of the woman artist: "Without realizing it, we women were not very constant in painting. Not because we wanted to, but because we had to do many things and sometimes there was no time to paint".

Beauty, a respectful and loving look at the real world

Asked about the tendency to beauty and the greater identification of artists with idealism than with realism, Isabel Quintanilla pointed out that "there is something that illuminates the artist, I don't know if it is exactly beauty, it is something that impresses you, that reminds you and therefore evokes you".

However, Antonio López said that the question is not so much the dilemma between realism and idealism but the definition of beauty. In his opinion, "today we do not know what is beautiful. A respectful and loving look at the real world, that is beauty. A loving approach to the world".

On the artist's relationship with other painters, Antonio Lopez stressed the need for the art of others and assured that if he stopped painting it would be a relief to see what others do. "Antonio is a great enjoyer of everyone's art," added Juan José Aquerreta.

This colloquium is part of the Painting Workshop Masters of Figuration organized by the Service of Cultural Activities Office of the University of Navarra and in which there is a exchange of impressions between students and Antonio Lopez and Juan Jose Aquerreta. "I don't think I teach, because who learns from whom, I don't know. I like the workshops, but not when they say I'm teaching. For me it's a attention face-to-face among equals," said Antonio López, to which Aquerreta added: "In the workshops all we do is give others the opportunity to do their work".
