More than 4,500 digital media, published in 90 languages in more than 200 countries around the world, make up the new SCImago average Rankings, the first global ranking of digital media according to their web reputation. available on the Internet, is an initiative led by the SCImagoLab team, born at the University of Granada, and in which experts from the universities of Navarra, Granada and Pompeu Fabra collaborate.

This ranking moves away from traditional audience measurement systems and, instead, classifies the digital media at agreement according to their prestige and visibility, inspired by the method used by scientific journals. The study has been built from the combination of several web metrics and combines access and linking (popularity and prestige), as well as web traffic measures, to evaluate the positioning of the media and the strength of its bet on web and social networks.

Through this method, the ranking reveals which digital media are the most reputable worldwide. It also allows for more specific analyses by country and language. Originally focused on the digital editions of general newspapers with regional, national and international coverage, the ranking also plans to expand the type of digital media evaluated. Specifically, it will increase the volume of digital native media, specialized publications and websites from audiovisual media.

The global ranking of digital media, coordinated at the University of Navarra by Full Professor of Journalism Ramón Salaverría, will be updated four times a year, so that the transformation and digital evolution of the media can be monitored periodically. On the other hand, it will substantially expand the sample of digital media evaluated and will deepen its knowledge, with new variables of analysis.

Prior to the launch of the ranking in January 2023, the researcher team has completed two preliminary waves, in September and December 2022, which have allowed testing the robustness of the Digital Reputation Indicator (DRI). The group plans to publish the results of these tests in several articles that are in the process of being published in international scientific journals.
