The University of Navarra is hosting the congress proteomics congress "Proteomics and the Human Proteome: From Bench to Bedside," organized by the Spanish Society of Proteomics and the Latin American Human Proteome Organization (LAHUPO).

Held at the School of Science , the meeting 250 experts from nine countries, including some of the most internationally renowned specialists in this subject.

According to Fernando Corrales, director the Proteomics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics Unit at research center Applied research center (CIMA) at the University of Navarra, this discipline goal proteome, or the set of proteins in a cell, tissue, or organ—will provide a comprehensive view of cellular biology and its alterations, "and with it, to devise new diagnostic methods in the future that enable therapeutic strategies tailored to the needs of each individual," he clarifies.

In this regard, the doctor in Biochemistry Molecular Biology emphasizes that one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century will be, precisely, the identification of biomarkers for the early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, "which will facilitate more appropriate clinical intervention." With this goal in mind, CIMA Proteomics Unit CIMA projects to analyze the instructions of liver diseases and identify biological markers for liver fibrosis and liver cancer. His work has already resulted in 25 international publications and four patents over the past five years.

Most recent advances

Among the speakers at congress are three of the pioneers of this discipline: Peter Roepstorff, Michael Karas and Franz Hillenkamp, who will be made honorary members of the Spanish Proteomics Society. In addition, the President of the Human Proteome Organisation (HUPO), Professor Rolf Apweiler, and the leaders of the organization in the fields of liver and brain -Fuchu He and Helmut E. Meyer, respectively- will present in Pamplona the most recent advances in the study of the human proteome and its alterations associated with diseases.

partnership The meeting, which has the support of the Government of Navarra, SODENA, Digna Biotech and Genoma España, among other entities, will be completed with plenary sessions, oral communications and a wide range of posters sample on the main research being carried out in this field area.
