On February 6, the University of Navarra held the VII edition of the workshop "Together against Trafficking: Ambassadors of Hope", a space for awareness and reflection on human trafficking and its impact on society. Organized by the Archbishopric of Pamplona and Tudela, Villa Teresita and Tantaka, Solidarity Time Bank of the University of Navarra, the session took place framework of the Jubilee Year of Hope and was attended by Archbishop Florencio, Archbishop of Pamplona and Bishop of Tudela who, with this session, inaugurated the Social Sign of the Jubilee Year of Hope in the academic center.
During the workshop, recent data were presented that reflect the magnitude of this silenced reality. According to the Intelligence Center against Terrorism and Organized Crime of the administrative office of State Security, 1,466 victims of trafficking and exploitation were identified in Spain in 2023, of which 18 were minors. Trafficking for sexual exploitation remains the most widespread, with 664 victims, mostly women of South American origin. However, labor trafficking has been on the rise, with 807 victims, mainly of Moroccan and Colombian origin. Other less visible forms of trafficking, such as forced marriage and forced criminality, were also addressed.
Throughout the session, testimonies were shared that put faces to those who have suffered this violation of rights. Florencio Roselló, who in his speech stressed the importance of making this reality visible and assuming an active commitment to its eradication, recalled the figure of St. Josephine Bakhita, patron saint of victims of trafficking, who after being enslaved and exploited during her childhood managed to regain her freedom and dedicate her life to helping others. "We are facing a global phenomenon that surpasses the competencies of a single community or nation and, therefore, a mobilization of a dimension comparable to that of the phenomenon itselfis needed," he said, recalling the words of Pope Francis in his message for the 2015 World Peace workshop . Bishop Roselló also presented a new project promoted by the Diocese of Pamplona and Tudela: "The Church of Navarra against Trafficking". This project goal to create a shelter and support center for victims of trafficking in unprotected status .
On the other hand, a call was made to staff and collective responsibility, highlighting the role of Education in the fight against trafficking. In this context, it was stressed that the university is not only a training space, but also a place where dreams are built and ideas are nurtured. Education, it was emphasized, has the mission statement of helping to grow and develop, providing students with the necessary tools to face global challenges such as trafficking. The workshop concluded with a call to action, recalling that it is a global phenomenon that requires a coordinated and effective response. It also reaffirmed the commitment to continue promoting initiatives that contribute to the defense of human dignity and the eradication of all forms of exploitation.
