Eugenio Triana, Member of Parliament at congress (1982-1990) and ICANN Board member (1998-2000), met with the students of the Master's Degree Political and Corporate Communication (MCPC). The session helped students gain a deeper understanding of the evolution and technical operation of transformations that have changed our lives and the communication of organizations. Triana pointed out that it is a simple technology: "The protocol of the Internet (IP) was written in 1974 in a single 12-page article ". The network arose in the United States from the world of computing, not telephony, something that should be remembered at a time when the greatest volume of Internet connection is mobile.

The invention of the World Wide Web in Europe was a turning point: what started out as a network of data soon became a tool for the distribution of graphics and images: today it even allows television broadcasting.

The next qualitative leap was marked by the ability to access from mobile devices and broadband. Triana highlighted the great technological success of achieving "always on" on cell phones: "By solving this access problem, all networks can be connected, including the network satellite". The network is a truly universal system and we have reached the point where all humanity that can use the Internet uses it. He pointed out that although the "digital divide" is sometimes emphasized, the adoption of these technologies has allowed countries in development to reduce their distance from the most advanced ones. In his opinion, "open source" technologies are fundamental because applications count more and more in the business of network.

Eugenio Triana also shared his experience in Internet governance. He pointed out that the United States realized during the Clinton Administration that Internet governance should be global. Europe ensured its presence in the bodies that manage the network with the goal to avoid the loss of sovereignty of nations in the face of connectivity that is, in fact, global.
