Luis Herrera, Full Professor emeritus of the University, Gold Medal of the Canary Islands

The Full Professor emeritus of the University of Navarra Luis Herrera Mesa has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands 2023. A native of La Gomera, he has received this distinction from the Canary Islands Government for his research on climate change and biodiversity, dealing in his books with the nature of this island and betting on research and innovation.

Luis Herrera, professor of Biology and Full Professor of Zoology, has carried out most of his work professor at the University of Navarra where, after graduating in Biological Sciences from the University of La Laguna in 1972, he did his doctorate in 1975. award Humboldt, Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Favorite Son of La Gomera, will receive the Gold Medal on May 30, in an institutional act that will take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the occasion of the Day of the Canary Islands.

Luis Herrera has been distinguished along with 13 other personalities and institutions. The Gold Medal of the Canary Islands is awarded to persons or entities that, inside or outside the Canary Islands, have earned this recognition from the people of the Canary Islands. It is granted by decree, prior to agreement of the committee of the Government. The initiative to grant the Gold Medal corresponds to the President of the Canary Islands, by his own decision or at proposal of the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
