Jaione Barrenetxe, PhD in Biology, scientist at the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, has been awarded the scholarship FEA/SEA of the Spanish Arteriosclerosis Foundation 2009 for basic research , during the congress of the scientific society held in Pamplona. The award awards the project "Role of metalloprotease-10 (MMP-10) in the development, progression and rupture of atherosclerotic plaque", which will be carried out at the area of Cardiovascular Sciences of the CIMA.
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arteries that causes vascular syndromes such as acute myocardial infarction or stroke. It is currently one of the main causes of mortality in Spain. Dr. Barrenetxe's work studies the role of a protein, MMP-10, in the process of arterial thrombosis. "Our goal is to determine the involvement of this protein in the different phases of vascular injury: from the initial alteration of the endothelium to plaque rupture, which is the trigger for acute clinical problems. We also want to know the phenomena of cell proliferation and migration involved in the development of this injury in the bloodstream."
At partnership with researchers from the University of Washington (USA), the CIMA team has developed a new experimental model to study how deficiency of this protein affects the development of atherosclerotic lesions. "It also aims to deepen the effect of the administration of the human MMP-10 protein, whose cloning, expression and purification has been the result of this researcher's work in recent years," explains Dr. José Antonio Rodríguez, scientist at laboratory of Atherosclerosis.

Special mentions

In addition to the scholarship for basic research , Dr. Barrenetxe received a second prize for a scientific communication on clinical and experimental arteriosclerosis. During the congress held in Pamplona, two special mentions were awarded to works carried out at the laboratory of Atherosclerosis of the CIMA and the department of Cardiology of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
