A team of scientists from the University of Navarra receives a scholarship Novartis grant from research
34,000 and is awarded to projects related to an enzyme involved in the development of arterial hypertension.
A team from the area of Cardiovascular Sciences of the research center Applied Medicine ( CIMA) of the University of Navarra, led by Javier Díez, has received a scholarship Novartis de research from the Renin Academy.
34,000, the financial aid is awarded to research projects related to renin, an enzyme produced by the kidneys. Renin triggers a process that narrows blood vessels and, when inappropriately activated, is part of the process that leads to development hypertension.
According to data of the high school Nacional de Estadística, there are more than 3,700,000 Spaniards with hypertension. The latest mortality figures indicate that in 2007 cardiovascular diseases continued to be the leading cause of death in Spain, accounting for 32% of deaths in the country. Renal disease accounted for 2% of all deaths.
