Scientists at the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra have identified the targets of the NatB enzyme, which account for 20% of cellular proteins. The results have been published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, PNAS.

According to Dr. Rafael Aldabe, researcher of laboratory of Clinical Immunology, "we have shown that this enzyme is necessary for the actin cytoskeleton to function correctly (and therefore cells can move), an activity conserved from yeast to humans".

Scientists are currently trying to decipher how to inhibit this enzyme so that it can block cell proliferation and tumor development . "On the other hand, we are developing molecules that inhibit the activity of the NatB enzyme, in order to develop molecules with antimetastatic and antitumor capacity."
