On the occasion of the European Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day, which is celebrated on October 16, student body final years of Degree in Nursing at the University of Navarra will teach other students, and anyone interested, how to perform basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). This activity of knowledge dissemination and health care will take place on October 14 in the esplanade of the School of Communication from 15.30 to 17.30 h.

This is an initiative of the Center for Nursing Simulation (CSE), which will use six simulators available at the Center for the teaching and internship of Degree: two manikins of leave fidelity, two of self training CPR model sherpa and two basic buddy CPR.

"The purpose of this activity is to raise awareness of the importance of a maneuver that, if done correctly, can save lives," says the director of the Simulation Center, Virginia La Rosa.

Leire Sola, CSE teacher who has participated in the coordination of the activity, adds: "Although it may be scary, or we are not sure if we are doing it right, it is always better to try the maneuver than not doing anything at all. Therefore, actions such as this one, aimed at learning the basic steps to perform correct CPR, can help us to face a vital status with more safety and knowledge ".

Regarding the most common mistakes when practicing this maneuver, Almudena Castillo, also a professor at the CSE and coordinator of the activity, points out that "even in series and movies, it is common to see how the first thing that is checked is whether or not there is a pulse in the neck of the unconscious person, when the first thing to do is to check whether or not the patient responds and whether or not he is breathing, in order to assess whether it is a cardiorespiratory arrest and the appropriate thing to do is to apply the massage".
