In 2024 the School of Nursing constituted its own branch of the international association Sigma, and consequently, the first chapter of Sigma in Spain was born under the degree scroll: Alpha Gamma Alpha. One year later, the first assembly and induction ceremony of this chapter was held.

The workshop began with a roundtable on leadership in Sigma, moderated by Dean Ana Choperena, and with the participation of prominent figures such as Dorothy Jones, Sigma's international reference; Maribel Saracíbar, the first member of the society in the School; and Hildegart González, recently named honorary member of the chapter.

In 2002 Maribel Saracíbar was invited by Dorothy Jones to join Sigma. In her words: "the invitation was not only an honor, but it was a transformation that meant a lot in my academic life: international connection, academic excellence and nursing leadership".

This first seed is reflected today, 23 years later, and thanks to the work of many generations. "The Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter is a seed of commitment and leadership to advance nursing with the goal of making a difference in the classroom, research, clinical internship , professional colleagues and training," said Maribel.

This is also expressed by Hildegard González, who, without being a nurse, expressed her gratitude for the welcome she has received both at the School of Nursing and at Sigma Theta Tau:

"During my research career in the field of nursing communication, I constantly came across Sigma as a reference letter. It was Sigma that prompted me to pursue this line of research. The partnership with Professor Richard Ricciardi was a core topic consolidation on this path. For me, the greatest value of Sigma's recognition is the confirmation that our research contributes something significant to the nursing profession. And, although I am not a nurse, I am proud to be able to contribute to your world."

Before continuing with the induction ceremony, Dorothy Jones addressed these words to the future members of Alpha Gamma Alpha: "Being inducted into Sigma means receiving recognition for your leadership and the excellence of your work. More importantly, it opens the door to a wealth of knowledge, research opportunities, and a global nursing community that will support and inspire your professional growth."

Then, Mercedes Pérez, president of the chapter, continued with the induction ceremony for students Naroa Asiain Basarte, Sophia Maxine Espino Carlos, Meritxell de Lecea Ilardia and Adriana Rodríguez Antón, as well as nursing leader Edgardo Álvarez Muñoz (inducted online).

"To be part of Sigma Theta Tau is to accept the responsibility of leadership and to make a difference in 21st century nursing," stressed Mercedes Perez.

Finally, the report of activities for the 2024-2025 academic year was presented, highlighting: The workshop on nursing leadership in advanced internship (October 2024, Madrid), the lecture by Professor Richard Ricciardi: The Power of Sigma (March 2025, Pamplona), the Sigma Research Day (March 2025), several activities to disseminate the chapter in Madrid and Pamplona, and the international participation in the Sigma Biennial Convention in Indianapolis (November 2025).

The president closed the event with words of thanks and encouragement: "This is just the beginning. Together we will build a bequest of leadership, evidence and commitment to global nursing."
