University launches national call for diabetes prevention subject 2

Seeks 315 volunteers to conduct a worldwide study aimed at slowing the increase of this disease, which affects almost 4.5 million Spaniards.

The Center for Nutrition Research of the University of Navarra is issuing a national call for diabetes prevention subject 2, coinciding with the World Diabetes Daywhich will be held on Friday, November 14. 315 volunteers are sought for a worldwide study on the prevention of this chronic disease and obesity..

The goal is to identify the patron saint most effective way of life to curb the increase of this pathology, which affects nearly 4.5 million Spaniards (about 320 million worldwide), and is associated, among other factors, with increased body weight and a sedentary lifestyle.

The PREVIEW study will analyze for the first time two types of per diem expenses and two levels of physical exercise, of proven evidence in body weight control. The dietary and physical activity indicators are: one per diem expenses moderately high in protein and with higher proportion of complex carbohydrates and fiberand the other with moderate protein content y lower proportion of complex carbohydrates and fiberboth combined with intense or moderate physical exercise.

This project, financed by the European Unionis being developed simultaneously in Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. The research center in Nutrition of the University of Navarra is the Spanish manager to develop this study, under the direction of Professor Alfredo Martinez.

The study has The program is national in scope and is open to anyone who is overweight or obese, between the ages of 10-18 and 25-70, and who is concerned about their health.. Those who, without being diagnosed with diabetes subject 2, have an abnormal increase in the need to eat (polyphagia), excessive urine output (polyuria), increased thirst (polydipsia) and weight loss for no apparent reason, which are the main symptoms of the disease, are also encouraged to participate.

Personalized attention to those interested is offered at the Metabolic Unit of the University of Navarra and at the Madrid headquarters of the Clinica Universidad de Navarra. "One of the most important features of this study, besides its magnitude, is the fact that the modification of habits is done through the nutritional Education ."Professor Martinez points out. "The participants learn how to choose foods based on simple patterns and with the advice of our entire team.but the design of menus and exercise guidelines will be done by the volunteers themselves," says researcher.

The PREVIEW study not only consists of providing a per diem expenses, but also in to change the patron saint power supply in the long term deadline. To this end, volunteers interested in participating will have regular sessions of nutritional Education , cooking workshops and physical Education .
