More than 150 people attended the first lecture Science Week, organized by the School of Science at the University. Johann Martínez-Lüscher, researcher department Environmental Biology, delivered the lecture “Climate Crisis: Where We’ve Come From and Where We’re Headed”in the auditorium Sciences Building. The lecture attended by 10th-grade students and high school diploma IES Navarro Villoslada, IES Julio Caro Baroja, and high school Amigó high school .
During the meeting, Martínez-Lüscher made a historical tour of the different events that have conditioned the changes in the Planet (glaciations and the five great extinctions) and how plants and carbon dioxide levels have determined the Earth's climate for millions of years.
Biodiversity loss, food production, health risks and climate refugees are four important consequences of the increase in temperature and CO2 on Earth. Martinez-Lüscher says that "if we do not take corrective measures we will end up with crocodiles in the Arctic", and that we must produce less carbon dioxide and use technology to reduce emissions and to capture CO2.
The scientist explained the research developed in the department of Environmental Biology in this subject, that is, the response to climate change of crops and the consequence that has, for example, climate variations on the composition and production of food.
