Three scientists from the University of Navarra, among the most cited researchers in the world

Jesús San Miguel, Alfredo Martínez and Miguel Ángel Martínez are among the 115 Spaniards highlighted in the report prepared by Clarivate Analytics.

Three researchers from the University of Navarra are among the most cited experts in the world according to the list of Highly Cited Researchers compiled by Clarivate Analytics, one of the most reputable rankings in the international academic and scientific community. It is estimated that only one out of every 1000 researchers worldwide are considered "highly cited".

They are Jesús San Miguel, director of Clinical and Translational Medicine at the University of Navarra, Miguel Ángel Martínez, Full Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and Alfredo Martínez, Full Professor of Nutrition.

The report highly cited researchers identifies scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through the publication of high impact articles during the last decade. Specifically, the 1% of the most cited articles between 2006 and 2016, about 140000 publications, have been taken into account to compile the ranking. Thus, the study selects 6078 researchers for their contributions in 21 areas of reference letter. This fifth edition has also incorporated the cross field category, which includes 2000 researchers with impact in different fields.

Spain, in the top 10 by country

The ranking establishes a comparison by country, headed by the USA, the UK and China. Spain appears in position issue 10, with 115 researchers on the list, 50 more than last year.

Of these, Jesús San Miguel stands out for his contribution in the field of clinical medicine, specifically in the field of hematology and translational research . Alfredo Martínez and Miguel Ángel Martínez are positioned as the most cited Spaniards in the area of Nutrition.

Jesus San Miguel

The Full Professor Jesús San Miguel is director of Clinical and Translational Medicine at the University of Navarra. Full Professor of Hematology, he worked as professor and head of the Hematology Service at the University Hospital of Salamanca and was director scientist of the high school of research Biomedical of this city. Among his areas of specialization are multiple myeloma, immunophenotyping and prognostic factors in leukemias and minimal residual disease.

President of the International Myeloma Society and head of group of CIBERONC (Centro research Biomédica en network de Oncología), he has been publisher associate of Blood Journal and Hematologica and member of the advisory committees of the European Hematology Association, the Leukemia Research Foundation and the International Myeloma Foundation. His scientific production translates into more than 800 international publications, being one of the world's hematologists with the highest impact.

He has also received international awards such as the Waldenström Award, Kyle Award, Jose Carreras Award, Ham-Wasserman Lecture Award, EBMT Award and Michaelli Award; and national awards, including the award Rey Jaime I de research Médica, the award Nacional de Oncología or the award Nacional de research. He has received the Cross of Merit from the Ministry of Defense (for his contributions on the Balkan syndrome) and the Commendation of the Civil Order of Health.

Miguel Angel Martinez

The Full Professor Miguel A. Martínez-González arrived at the University of Navarra in 1995, coming from Granada, to begin the. department from Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Senior Associate Professor by civil service examination at the University of the Basque Country (1999) and Full Professor by national habilitation in Malaga (2005), was appointed in 2016 Full Professor visitor of Harvard University.

Founder in 1999 and researcher principal of the project SUN (Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra), he is coordinator of the network of researchers PREDIMED (2006-2013), the largest study on Mediterranean per diem expenses .

He is also researcher principal of the macro-project funded by the committee European of research (ERC) PREDIMED-Plus and of several projects of research in health funded by the U.S. government (NIH). Member of the CIBEROBN (Center research Biomedical network of Obesity Physiology and Nutrition), he has published more than 600 scientific articles in international journals and is the author of more than 20 books.

Alfredo Martinez

The Full Professor of Nutrition Alfredo Martinez is director scientific of the research center in Nutrition (CIN) of the University of Navarra. Since 2017 he has also chaired the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS ), the third most important body in the field of Nutrition after WHO and FAO, composed of a hundred countries.

Throughout his degree program he has participated in programs of study as DIOGENES, NUGENOB, FOOD4ME, PREDIMED, PREVIEW, SEAFOODPlus and SWEET, whose results have been published in important journals of the specialization program. He has also published or collaborated in more than 800 scientific articles in the areas of Obesity and Nutrition and Omic Sciences.

The also researcher of the network CIBEROBN has received awards such as the Hippocrates and Dupont awards; and collaborated as Visiting Professor at the universities of Nothingham, Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, Oxford and King College London.
