"Beer is not isotonic. It is a myth. Although the alcohol content in some beers may be relatively low, it should never be replaced by an isotonic drink or water after physical exercise". This was stated by Ana Antón Solanas, current director of the Sports Nutrition program at St. Mary's University (UK), at the University of Navarra.

According to this expert, a graduate of School of Pharmacy and Nutrition of the academic center and Master's Degree in Sports Nutrition from Oxford Brookes University, the nutritional strategy of an elite athlete is complex and requires monitoring and control by an expert. However, "anyone who trains often, even if they are not a professional, must take care of their diet to achieve adequate recovery and reach certain goals". The basis is always a "healthy, varied and balanced" diet, adds the expert.

On the need to take nutritional supplements when practicing sports intensely, Ana Antón Solanas considers that although they can play their role, and even be necessary, for elite athletes, "the general population does not need them. In any case, my committee for people who take their training very seriously is that before resorting to them, they should consult a sports nutritionist to avoid inappropriate doses and even inappropriate products.

Regarding the resource to "miracle" diets, such as the per diem expenses paleo -rich in raw meat- or the per diem expenses keto -rich in fats-, the sports nutrition specialist assures that "they do not provide any advantage in terms of sports performance or even as a healthy per diem expenses . It is true that high-fat diets are used in sports nutrition on different occasions. Some ultra-endurance athletes consume a per diem expenses very high in fat and very leave in carbohydrates; and they are even used for promote relatively rapid changes in body composition, but always in a controlled way".

A vegan and a sportsman?

One option that is compatible is the internship of intense sport with the vegan per diem expenses (who do not eat meat, eggs or dairy products): "Although it is true that most people who do it have to consume some subject supplement that complements the per diem expenses. In any case, my committee is always to consult with nutrition experts if you are going to take a vegan per diem expenses ."

Finally, the specialist - who is offering different sessions this week at the University of Navarra's Sports NutritionDiploma - considers that the field of sports nutrition is at plenary session of the Executive Council development : "It is vital within the team multidisciplinary that surrounds a team or an athlete. We are in charge of advising athletes on health, nutrition and performance, supplements, etc. both in training and on the road. We are figures core topic in their preparation".
