Amaia Alcalde, Iñaki Echeverría and Juana Fernández, winners of the 2nd edition of the scientific monologue contest
In the competition, organized by the Science Museum of the University of Navarra, participated professors, students and graduates.
Amaia Alcalde, a 4th year Biology student, has won first place in the II edition of the Scientific Monologue Contest, held at Sciences Building of the University of Navarra. Alcalde surprised the audience with the monologue "Bats, viruses and other adorable creatures" in which the young Navarrese explained that bats, despite being carriers of many viruses, do not develop the diseases they cause and also contribute to the control of insect populations.
The second position went to the Navarrese Iñaki Echeverría -who was winner of Famelab Spain 2019- with the monologue "La Re-Evolución Granular" in which the Physics PhD student explained some phenomena related to collective behavior. The third award went to Professor Juana Fernández who with the degree scroll "Los pedos de las vacas" explained some aspects about environmental pollution.
Ujué Moreno, professor at the School of Science and researcher at CIMA; Azucena Díez, psychiatrist at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra; and Maider Triviño, a student in the Master's Degree research , rounded out the list of finalists for this second edition of competition .
This contest, organized by the Science Museum and which brought together about a hundred people, has the goal to encourage communication and knowledge dissemination of science in a fun and entertaining format.
In this first edition, 6 monologuists, students from Degree, Master's Degree and doctorate, professors, researchers and alumni of the University of Navarra participated. Each participant had a maximum of 10 minutes to present their monologue in an informative tone and accessible to the public.
The competition jury competition of Enrique Cobos, manager at the University of Navarra Science Museum; Elisa Monserrat, the university’s marketing director; and Juan Manuel Menta, student representative for the School of Science a senior in the dual Degree Chemistry Biochemistry The gala was hosted by microbiologist and science communicator Pedro Soler, last year’s winner of the first edition of this competition.
